Travel Instructions for Zanzibar

Since May 2021, Zanzibar has presented new measurements affecting all travellers. Please read carefully the following conditions and procedures issued by the local authority. The full official document is available HERE.

• From May 2021 a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test certificate is required for all travellers using a sample collected within 96 hours before arrival to Tanzania. Fully vaccinated travellers are also required for a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test certificate with no exception.

• All travelers arriving from countries with highest number of COVID-19 cases based on WHO epidemiological updates shall be subjected to rapid test at Point of Entry at a cost of USD 25. To skip long queues for manual payment upon arrival, book Rapid test for arrival and pay online (Mastercard / Visa) HERE.

• All travellers have to fill out the Traveler’s Surveillance Form HERE before arrival to Zanzibar. Please, print your profile after filling the form and present it to the health desk upon arrival.

• A single three-month entry tourist visa for your Zanzibar holiday can be applied online or upon arrival at USD 50 per person.

• All travellers entering or leaving Tanzania will be subject to enhanced screening measures at port of entries. Travellers with signs and symptoms of COVID-19, will be tested and if found Positive shall be managed at designated health facilities according to Zanzibar operational guidelines.

• Travelers subjected to mandatory quarantine shall choose a place from the list of Hotels designated by the Government. Returning residents will be allowed to isolate themselves in their homes subject to adherence with the Zanzibar COVID-19 guidelines.

• A negative COVID-19 test result on departure from Zanzibar is not needed by travellers unless required by the airline or country of destination. Online registration is mandatory for all travellers that require a RT-PCR/Antigen rapid testing. Please register at www.zanzibarcovidtesting.co.tz. • All travellers are required to have valid travel insurance for the whole period of their stay.

EMIRATES

Travel to Tanzania
If you are travelling to Tanzania, you are required to take a COVID‑19 PCR test before arrival. You must also complete a Traveller Surveillance form online before arrival in Dar es Salaam.

COVID‑19 PCR testing
All passengers, whether foreign nationals or returning residents, will be required to present a negative Real Time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT‑PCR) testing or Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) done at a nationally accredited/approved laboratory using a sample tested within 96 hours of departure to Tanzania.

All travellers, whether foreigners or returning residents, arriving from countries experiencing variants of concern/variants or those who have travelled through those countries in the last 14 days regardless of route taken must undergo rapid testing at points of entry at their own cost. The cost for COVID‑19 rapid test is USD 10 or TZS 23,000 and is non‑refundable.

For Zanzibar, the cost for the rapid test is USD 25 or TZS 58,000. The updated list of countries required to undergo rapid antigen testing is available on the official website website or at points of entry.

Children 5 years old and below are exempted from COVID‑19 testing requirements.

All passengers, whether foreign nationals or returning residents, travelling from countries with new COVID‑19 variants based on WHO daily updates, or those that have travelled through those countries within the last 14 days, regardless of route taken, must undergo a 14‑day quarantine at a government approved facility. Returning residents will be allowed to self‑isolate at home.

Travel from Tanzania
If you are travelling from Tanzania, you might be required to take a COVID‑19 PCR test before arrival or departure depending on the requirements of your airline and destination.

Quarantine on Arrival:
There are no self-quarantine requirements for travellers arriving into the country who are not showing any COVID-19 symptoms

Entry Conditions:
• All arriving passengers will undergo screening and must complete a Health Declaration form online Health Surveillance Form 24 hours prior to arrival – upon submission a Unique Health Code will be received & shown on arrival
• A negative COVID-19 test certificate upon arrival. The test should be based on Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction ( RT-PCR) using sample collected within 96 hours before departure to Tanzania
• As of 19 Sep 2021 : All arriving travellers, aged 6 years and older, entering the United Republic of Tanzania from the following countries, or those who have travelled to the following countries in the last 14 days regardless of the route taken, will be required to undergo a Rapid Test on arrival, the cost of which is USD 10 per person per test for the Tanzanian mainland and USD 25 per person per test for Zanzibar. These countries are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, France, India, Malawi, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America, Rwanda, and South Africa;
• All travellers who require a Rapid Test on arrival are advised to pay for the Rapid Test prior to arrival in Tanzania, to avoid any delay on arrival. Travellers arriving on the Tanzanian mainland can do so using an automatically generated control number received after completing the Traveller Surveillance Form via https://afyamsafiri.moh.go.tz/. Travellers arriving in Zanzibar can do so via https://zanzibarcovidtesting.co.tz/ – don’t forget to keep a confirmation of this to hand.
• Passengers showing symptoms of COVD-19 will be subject to further testing and may be required to quarantine at a government designated facility as their own cost
• All arriving passengers are to wear masks for travel and dispose of them when exiting the airport

Other Conditions:
• International travelers must have valid health/medical insurance before arrival
• International travelers are encouraged to apply for online e-visas prior to arrival
• Hotels, lodges, and restaurants have reopened, with social distancing measures and increased health and safety measures in place
• While in the country, all international travelers should observe adherence to Infection Prevention and Control measures such as hand hygiene, wearing masks and keeping physical distancing as deemed appropriate
• Curfew 21h00 – 05h00

On departure:
Presentation of negative PCR test if required by airline or onward destination.

Please note that the current government advice is for travellers to undergo COVID-19 testing a minimum of 5 days prior to departure (depending on the specific airline and destination country requirements) to ensure adequate time is allowed for test results to be received

What are the country entry and exit requirements?
Test Certificate Requirements:

All arriving travellers must present a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test certificate issued 96 hours before departure. The only accepted test is Real Time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) testing or Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs) done at a nationally accredited/approved laboratory.

Travellers aged below five years, transiting travellers and aircraft crew are exempt from the above requirement.

All truck drivers including crew should hold a valid COVID-19 negative RT-PCR or NAATs certificate obtained from an accredited/approved national Laboratory. The validity of the certificate shall be 14 days only. The truck drivers will be tested free for RT-PCR.

Test certificates issued by foreign countries are accepted.

The only accepted test is Real-Time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) testing or Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs)

Test On Arrival:
Arriving travellers will need to undergo mandatory screening.

Travellers arriving from countries with variants of concern or with high numbers of COVID-19 cases or who have travelled through those countries in the last 14 days are required to take a rapid test at their own expense at the point of entry. The list of countries for which a rapid test is required can be found at the point of entry.

Travellers aged five years and below, transiting travellers, and aircraft crew are exempt from the above requirements.

All truck drivers including crew will be subjected to enhanced screening at points of entry and will be quarantined or isolated at designated facilities at their own cost if they are suspected of COVID-19 infection.

Quarantine On Arrival:
Travellers do not have to undergo mandatory quarantine.

Travellers who have a travel history in high-risk countries will need to undergo a 14-day quarantine at a government facility. Returning residents can undergo quarantine at home.

Travellers with a positive COVID-19 Rapid Antigen test are required to enter quarantine at a government-approved facility for 14 days or more at their own cost until they obtain a negative RT-PCR test result and will be subjected to strict surveillance procedures.

Returning residents may undergo quarantine at their homes for 14 days, or until a negative RT-PCR test result is obtained.
All truck drivers including crew will be subjected to enhanced screening at Points of Entry and will be quarantined or isolated at designated facilities at their own cost if they are suspected of COVID-19 infection.

Travellers subject to mandatory quarantine are responsible for all costs associated with the quarantine, including hotel fees.

Form Requirements:

All arriving travellers must complete an online Traveler’s Health Surveillance Form available here within 24 hours before arrival to the Tanzanian mainland.

Travellers will then receive a Unique Health Code (UHC), which they will present to health officials upon arrival.

Other Requirements:
• Foreigners can enter the country.

• Citizens and residents are allowed to enter.

• Transit services are allowed.

• Transiting travellers who have to wait in Tanzania for more than 72 hours will be required to go through a rapid test upon arrival.

• Transit by car or bus is possible without restrictions.

• A vaccination for COVID-19 is not required for entry into the country.

• Proof of insurance coverage for COVID-19 expenses is not required to enter the country.

• Borders are open except the Nakonde border with Zambia, which is currently closed to passenger traffic but open for cargo movement.
